20 October 2017 – Auto enrolment changes

It’s now five years since auto-enrolment began – since when over 8.5 million people have been enrolled, many of whom will never have had a pension before.

If you’re employing staff for the first time you now need to offer a pension scheme from day one.

In the past employers were given a ‘staging date’. This gave new employers time to investigate their auto enrolment duties in advance. Workplace pension duties now commence from day one of employing a member of staff.

Some employers will still have future staging dates but they will all have to have a scheme in place by mid 2018.

If you are about to employ someone for the first time you will need to consider:

  • registering as an employer with HMRC
  • taking out liability insurance
  • preparing for auto-enrolment

For auto-enrolment you will need to:

  • choose a pension scheme – or check your existing one
  • work out who to put into a pension scheme
  • write to your staff and
  • declare your compliance
